Challenges

DeLury Square Park is a small “sitting” park and the design underestimated the amount of traffic and use from the exploding residential community, local office workers and crowds of tourists that pass through our historic neighborhood every day. Consequently, this park has suffered extended abuse and misuse. Soon after the park was open, it was overrun with debris and garbage. In addition, many dog owners have taken their dogs directly to the park and allowed their dogs to urinate, etc on much of the plants destroying many of them and leaving major sections bare and reduced to dirt. Because of the state of the park, many local resident avoided using the park as a gathering place and the intention to offer green space was denied. When it was no longer tenable to allow this abuse to continue. Friends of DeLury Square Park was founded in Oct. 2012 to address these issues.
